How To Achieve A Healthy, Balanced Diet

Since a lot of people struggle with trying to achieve a healthy, balanced diet, I thought I would talk about some tips I have for doing exactly that. So many people think that they need to commit to a super extreme diet for x amount of time to lose x amount of weight and then just go back to eating exactly as they were before, only to gain all of the weight they lost back, and that’s just not the best way to live.

These tips will help you find more balance and build a healthy foundation in your diet so that you’re still able to eat a variety of treats and junk food, but with less guilt!

How To Achieve A Healthy Balanced Diet

How To Achieve A Healthy and Balanced Diet

Make Sure You Eat A Healthy Breakfast Every Morning

If you start your day off with a super healthy and nutritious (ideally plant based) breakfast, then you’re getting things started on the right foot and you’ll have a little more wiggle room to potentially eat something not as healthy later on in the day.

Eating a nutritious breakfast of a good portion size will ensure that you’re not leaving the house in a bad mood because you’re hungry! Seriously, one of the keys to having a great, balanced day is getting a solid breakfast in before you go anywhere in the morning, because then you’ll be less likely to binge on unhealthy foods later in the day.

Tip: If you’re short on time or you know that you’re going to have a busy morning, prep your breakfast the night before and take it to go!

Eat More Plant Based Foods

Whole plant based foods are unbeatable in terms of providing energy and keeping you full for longer (if you eat the right portion sizes of course). Getting that ever so important fiber, and not to mention all of the nutrients and antioxidants that whole plant based foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds and nuts provide, is just like extra insurance that you’re not going to be so hungry by the end of the day that you go out and binge on a ton of junk food and then regret it!

Also, plant based and vegan junk food is healthier for you off the bat for many reasons – for one, plant based foods contain zero cholesterol, and animal based products are the most fat and calorie dense foods you can eat. That’s not to say that all vegan foods are “healthy”, just healthier. If you want to have a donut, eat a vegan one! They taste exactly the same and there are vegan donuts available in every city by now.

Keep A Food Journal

Actually keeping track of and being fully aware of what you’re eating can really help you to achieve a healthy and balanced diet. You might not even realize you’re eating a little too much junk food on a day to day basis, but seeing it all written down in front of you can be super eye opening.

Once you have about a week’s worth of meals and snacks written down, you can start to analyze your diet and identify any potential areas of improvement.

Don’t Restrict Yourself

There are so many diets out there that tell you to restrict fat, carbs, and whatever else, but if you’re looking to balance your diet in a healthy way that’s really not the way to go. Restricting yourself is only going to make you cranky and probably start binge eating things that are going to make you feel super guilty later on, which is what you do NOT want!

Balance is all about feeling good overall with how things are going in your diet. It’s not about limiting yourself, counting calories or following crazy extreme fad diets!

Treat Yourself

And obviously, you’re going to want to eat dessert or unhealthy meals every so often. The key is to plan for it so that you don’t feel guilty afterwards.

As an example, if I have a dinner reservation on a Saturday night and I know I’m going to be eating a huge vegan burger with a side of greasy fries, then I’ll make sure I eat extremely clean for the whole day leading up to dinner. This way, I’m feeling good about what I ate for most of the day and then eating a greasy delicious dinner is kind of like a reward for my clean eating all throughout the day!

A food diary has helps a lot. Especially when you’re trying to pinpoint what’s causing problems.
