In the wake of some pretty scary and sad events in the last week or two, it didn’t really feel right to post something about beauty and style right now. Today’s post is going to be all about solid, constructive ways you can actively work to make the world a better place.
I’ve seen a lot of people posting about this on Instagram, which I think is great, but I also think it’s about more than just using a platform to post about a message. It’s also about taking direct action to implement change, and it starts with yourself!
Black Lives Matter Movement
Of course, because of recent events, this is on everyone’s minds. So first and foremost, here are some organizations you can donate to to help advance the BLM movement:
NAACP Legal Defense Fund
The NAACP fights for racial justice and equal rights for all. One of the key issues they work on is police reform!
National Police Accountability Project
This is a group that does exactly what its name says. They are working to end police brutality in our communities and have been doing so since 1999.
Showing Up For Racial Justice
Showing Up For Racial Justice works to educate people on how to build a racially just and fair society.
This post from The Cut has a huge list of other organizations you can check out and make a donation to!
Aside from donating, the most important things you can do are to educate yourself and get out there and vote. The only way to make systemic, widespread change is for us to come together and demand the change.
Anti Animal Cruelty/Vegan Movement
The vegan movement is gaining more and more speed with every month that goes by, and I’m so excited about this.
You might be thinking, why am I including this movement when Black Lives Matter needs to be addressed first and foremost? I’m including it because it’s not about picking one. It’s not either/or, it’s all of the above. As humans, it is our moral imperative to ensure we’re creating a better world and working to end ALL forms of violence and oppression. If we wait until one form of oppression is completely erased from the world forever, we’ll literally be waiting forever because it will never fully happen, and therefore no positive change would ever be implemented.
So I encourage you guys to check out PETA’s Instagram and watch something that makes you uncomfortable. Watch a video about the dairy industry, or how animals are tested on in labs, and make a change in your everyday life that can lessen this completely unnecessary violence and torture.
Global Warming + Environmental Issues
When it comes to the environment, the best thing that you can do is reduce the size of your eco footprint. This can be done in many ways, a few of which are:
-
Drive less, walk more
-
Turn off lights you’re not using
-
Unplug small appliances when you don’t need them
-
Eat fewer animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) – this one is SO IMPORTANT!
-
Stop the constant cycle of consuming: buying more stuff, getting rid of more stuff, etc
There are also lots of organizations out there who are doing amazing things for the planet! Here are a few:
World Vegan Foundation
They are working to protect and preserve the planet and it’s animals/wildlife.
Reducetarian Foundation
They educate people on the devastating environmental effects of eating animal products.
Rainforest Foundation
They work to protect the rainforests of Central and South America!
It’s so easy to take action in our everyday lives! We can all make conscious decisions to do better in the world.
