I'm so excited that clean, cruelty free beauty is becoming so mainstream – available @target

how to not get sick this winter

How To Not Get Sick + Glow Up This Winter

So it’s already November and the holiday season is coming up quick! As a result, a lot of people are looking into getting their flu shots and various other things of that nature in hopes of trying not to get sick this winter.

As a vegan and someone who’s super into health and wellness, I wanted to share my advice on how I avoid getting sick using a more plant based and holistic approach.

One huge thing that I’ve found is that what you eat can and does directly affect your immunity and your body’s ability to fight off germs!

Also, how you take care of your general wellbeing has a lot to do with it.

That being said, keep reading to check out my top tips on how not to get sick this holiday season:

1. Eat (Or Drink) Your Greens

Leafy green vegetables are jam packed with nutrients and antioxidants that will make you stronger and more resistant to sickness and infection.

Eating a salad or drinking a green juice is one of my favorite ways to ensure that I do not get sick when the weather starts to get cold. Not only do leafy greens help you avoid getting sick, but they also just make you feel so healthy!

If you need some ideas for what to eat on a plant based diet, you can go ahead and check out my post on what I eat in a day as a vegan! You can also check out my best tips on how to eat more plant based foods.

2. Make Sure You’re Well Rested

Getting enough sleep is one of the best ways to ensure that you will not get sick during the winter because sleep strengthens your immune system and keeps it functioning perfectly.

Getting enough sleep is good for your skin and will help to control your appetite too!

Sleep allows your body to completely recharge and refuel for the next day, so making sure you get at least 8 hours is so great for keeping you healthy, strong and glowing!

3. Choose Tea Instead Of Coffee

Certain types of tea, like green or ginger, are very anti-inflammatory and help to calm the body.

Drinking tea will hydrate you and fill your body with antioxidants, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to not get sick!

This tea is made from superfoods and is SO yummy – I use it whenever I’m feeling a little under the weather and I actually really feel like it helps beat that and get me back to feeling 100%.

4. Exercise Regularly

Exercising helps boost your immune system, and it also helps flush bacteria out of your lungs! And, regular exercise can help to balance your stress levels, which is great since too much stress can make you more likely to get sick!

5. Drink Lots Of Water

Water is the best for flushing toxins out of your system! I try to drink about 80 ounces of water a day – it doesn’t always happen, but I feel my best when it does and so will you!

6. Take Your Vitamins

Whether you are vegan or not, we ALL have a chance of being deficient in something. There are so many vitamins and minerals we need on a daily basis!

If you’re thinking about going vegan, here’s a quick story: I place a big emphasis on eating a super balanced diet, and in all my years of being vegan and getting my blood tested I am proud to say I have not been deficient in anything. I actually have HIGH levels of protein and calcium, the two things that people always tell vegans they’re not getting enough of!

Therefore, I don’t take vitamins on a consistent basis.

When I feel like I just want extra insurance that I’m getting everything I need, I will occasionally take a daily vitamin. This isn’t an everyday thing, and I mainly rely on my food to get all the nutrients I need.

But, if you’re someone who just likes to take a vitamin every single day, these multivitamins are the best that I’ve personally found!

The reason why they’re the best is they ONLY include nutrients that females actually typically don’t get enough of. They do NOT contain any fillers or cheap vitamins that the average American already gets more than enough of!

They also smell like a breath mint, they’re so good!

7. Take Time To Relax

Did you know that stress can destroy your ability to fight off sickness and it just generally weakens you altogether?

Take time to rest and relax this winter. Kick your feet up and watch your favorite show on Netflix by the fireplace, or read a book with a couple candles lit for some ambience.

8. Wash Your Hands

Washing your hands regularly throughout the day will get rid of unwanted bacteria that naturally accumulates from everything that our hands touch throughout the day!

I put spinach in my smoothie daily. Also, the place where I’m doing my candida detox, suggested mullein leaf tea. I had never heard of it before but apparently it helps with all types of upper respiratory problems.

These are awesome tips! I think most people don’t get enough sleep or drink enough water, which definitely weakens their immune systems!
