How To Stop Eating When You’re Bored

Lately, all of us have been spending much more time at home than normal, and this can lead to a lot of extra eating because of sheer boredom instead of actually being hungry. So I have some tips I use that help me to stop eating when I’m bored, and hopefully they’ll work for you guys too!

This post is in no way meant to discourage you from eating if you’re actually hungry, or from restricting yourself in any way. It’s only to help you stop boredom eating and redirect your focus to more productive and healthy things!

How To Stop Eating When You're Bored

How To Stop Eating When You’re Bored:

Find The Cause

Are you genuinely just eating when bored, or is it something else? Are you actually eating because you’re stressed, or sad, or angry, etc? Get to the root cause of the issue of why you’re eating when you’re not actually hungry, and then address it.

Once you do that, it becomes way easier to stop over eating when you’re bored. If you think that you’re actually eating because you’re stressed, then you can find a meditation to help calm you, or a relaxing book to read, or something along those lines! Identify the real cause and then you’ll be able to create a plan to fix it.

Take Your Vitamins

Sometimes, if you’re craving food or snacks when you’re bored and you’ve recently had a big meal and don’t really need to be eating, it could be because you’re deficient in one or more nutrients or minerals. You should definitely consult a doctor if you feel like that could be applicable to you, but I like to have that extra insurance of taking a multivitamin just to be safe.

This vitamin brand lets you personalize your vitamin packets with your name, and they are one of the highest quality vitamins out there right now! You can create your own custom vitamin packets with only the vitamins that you want, or you can just get their multivitamin which is super affordable!

Create A Distraction

If you are over eating just because you’re bored, then one thing you can do is to create a distraction for yourself so that you take your attention away from eating!

You can put on a movie, take an online class, or read a book, etc. Find something to do that doesn’t involve eating and distract yourself with it so that you won’t revert back to snacking!

Brush Your Teeth

You know that super clean and fresh feeling you get when you finish brushing your teeth? You can use that to your advantage, and brush your teeth if you feel like you want to start eating just out of boredom. You won’t want to ruin that feeling by eating, and pro tip – use a minty toothpaste flavor so that if you were tempted to eat after you brush, you would second guess it since the mint would make your food taste really gross!

Be More Mindful

Sometimes you can find yourself walking over to the fridge without even really thinking about it much. If you can practice being more mindful of yourself and your actions, and stop yourself when you’re about to go for more food, that’s a huge step right there. Pay attention and catch yourself when you’re about to slip up, and think about why you don’t want to eat and something else you can do instead.

Work On Your Self Esteem

It could be possible that you’re eating too much when you’re bored because you have low self esteem. If you think that might be the case for you, then do some exercises that will help you value yourself more – this could be repeating positive affirmations, writing down some things you love about yourself, or anything like that.

Commit To Yourself

If you really feel like you’re over eating out of boredom and want to reduce or stop doing it altogether, make a commitment to yourself that you’re going to change. Think about your self esteem and your physical health, both of which can be affected if you’re eating too much when you’re bored.
